Joanitah Nakacwa, a prominent advocate for LGBT rights and a key moderator at Tooro Action for Vulnerability and Human Rights Uganda (TAVUHURI), has become the latest victim of Uganda’s intensified crackdown on the LGBT community. During a peaceful meeting organized by TAVUHURI, police raided the gathering, arresting Nakacwa alongside the organization’s Executive Director, Mr. Bazekukeeta Atanazio, and several other staff members.

Nakacwa, who has worked tirelessly with TAVUHURI for three years, was charged with promoting homosexuality under Uganda’s stringent anti-LGBT laws. Her detention was marked by grave injustices, as she was denied access to legal representation for several days. While she languished in custody, the consequences of her arrest extended far beyond the prison walls.

News of Nakacwa’s arrest spread rapidly, leading to devastating repercussions. Her home was targeted by a violent mob, vandalized, and ultimately set ablaze. This tragic attack claimed the life of one of her children, leaving her family shattered.

Through the relentless efforts of TAVUHURI and their international allies, Nakacwa was eventually released on bail. However, the ordeal has left her deeply traumatized and focused on ensuring the safety of her surviving child. Despite her release, Nakacwa remains under threat, symbolizing the perils faced by LGBT advocates in Uganda.

While the police also detained TAVUHURI’s Executive Director, Mr. Bazekukeeta Atanazio, and other staff members, Nakacwa’s case highlights the extreme personal and professional sacrifices endured by individuals standing up for equality and human rights in a hostile environment.

TAVUHURI has called for immediate support from local and global communities to protect Nakacwa and her family and to ensure justice for the horrific violence inflicted on her. The organization remains steadfast in its mission, even in the face of growing threats.

Nakacwa’s courage and resilience in the face of such adversity serve as poignant reminders of the need for continued solidarity and advocacy for vulnerable communities in Uganda.
